A Clear Definition of Peer-Reviewed

This image shows a researcher performing research, writing her paper, sending the paper to the editor of a journal. Then the editor sends the paper to experts in the field for peer review. After much consulting and editing, the paper is published.

Peer-reviewed (sometimes called refereed or scholarly) journals contain articles  written by experts and are reviewed by several other experts in the field before the article is published in the journal in order to insure the article's quality.  The article is more likely to be scientifically valid, reach reasonable conclusions, and add to the knowledge base of a topic.
