Activities, Discussions, & Workshops for Embedded Librarian Instruction

The Library has created some sample discussions, activities, assessments, and workshops that can be implemented in our virtual instruction. Each of the sample lesson plans below can be implemented through Blackboard using the Synchronous and Asynchronous Embedded Librarian models.

The sample activities, discussions, and workshops can be implemented through Blackboard "as is" or modified in collaboration with your librarian to best meet the research needs of your students.

The Library's Information Literacy Program and sample lesson plans are aligned to the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. These are the national pedagogical standards for information literacy instruction.

Activities & Assessments

Explaining Source Authority & Expertise Students will participate in a synchronous virtual discussion with a librarian or watch an asynchronous video addressing authoritative voices in research. This will address how authority and expertise are conditional based on the type of information needed.
Reading Scholarly Sources - Identifying Important Concepts & Sources Students will read an article related to the discipline of the course. Students will identify and explain key conclusions and sources cited in the article.
Thinking Critically about Authority Have students compare authoritative sources within the subject area that demonstrate different conclusions, biases, or points of view. Ask students to consider how the authors used data and developed their arguments.
Thinking Critically about Different Types of Sources Have students compare different types of sources on the same topic (scholarly article, non-scholarly article, blog, podcast, etc). Students will identify defining characteristics of different source types/formats and how formatting influences how they think about a topic and will use the source.
Topic Narrowing & Research Question Development Students will use inquiry techniques to narrow and focus their research topic. Once the topic has been narrowed, students will draft a research question to guide their research inquiry and database searches.

The instructor creates an Ask-A-Librarian forum where students can ask for help with navigating library databases, catalog, and other resources

Research Topic Forum

The librarian participates by responding to posts in an existing forum in order to provide feedback related to choosing a topic or developing a research question
